Video: A Day With Nick Zammuto

This video was posted earlier this month in Nick Zammuto’s Blog. It is a short documentary by Matt Day, portraying a day in Zammuto’s life. I enjoyed it a lot, not only because it shows his envy-worthy lifestyle, but because we can see his process of songwriting/recording. Those familiar with the sounds of The Books and Zammuto will find this interesting because he unveils many of his weird musical techniques (that are often thought to be electronic, but really are analogue… or a weird hybrid between the two).

Update: Read about The Books breaking up. :(

Track: Zammuto – F U C-3PO

I was completely unaware that Nick Zammuto, from The Books had a solo project. About a month ago he released an EP titled Idiom Wind, featuring the track F U C-3PO. This song will also appear in the forthcoming self-titled album, to be released the third of April, via Temporary Residence. Zammuto seems to be sticking to his old experimental style, but the use of electric instruments has increased a lot. The thing about Nick Zammuto is that never ceases to innovate (a quality that I’ve always loved about The Books). Listen:

Listen to The Books.

Daniel Rossen announces solo EP

Daniel Rossen, from Grizzly Bear and Department Of Eagles, has announced the release of an EP titled Silent Hour/Golden Mile. It will be out the 20th of March via Warp.

So far, Rossen has released one of the EP’s tracks, Saint Nothing. It’s great, I love it, but if you expect to hear Grizzly Bear here, you might get disappointed. While you can hear some similarities, Daniel Rossen has created something very different. Listen below.

March will be a good month, first Andrew Bird’s new album is announced and now this.

J. Tillman (as Father John Misty) announces new solo album

Joshua Tillman, Fleet Foxes’ drummer and (amazingly underrated) solo artist announced the release of a new album via Sub Pop. Despite the fact that he has already released seven solo albums under his actual name, this time he chose to use the moniker of Father John Misty.

The album will be titled Fear Fun, according to The Agency Group site, where the following statement appeared:

“During the summer of 2011, Joshua Tillman, left Seattle to live in his van for two months, writing a novel under the influence of fungi and suddenly began to write songs under the name of Father John Misty, “Fear Fun” was recorded in Los Angeles with Jonathan Wilson and mixed by Phil Ek in Seattle. “Fear Fun” will be launched on May 1, 2012 on Sub Pop.”

So far, only one of this project’s songs is out, I Would Love You was uploaded to Misty’s Tumblr about a week ago.

Check out Tillman’s previous solo work.

Track: Grizzly Bear – Boy From School

I usually try to post about new music, but I recently stumbled upon this and I couldn’t resist. Grizzly Bear covered Hot Chip’s Boy From School in a Triple J Radio session. Nothing like one of my favourite bands playing one of the songs I used to hear obsessively some years ago. Enjoy.

Album: Nicolas Jaar – Space Is Only Noise

Nicolas Jaar depresses me. Not only because his music can sometimes be a bit depressive, also because this guy’s only 21 and manages to make this amazing music that also seems pretty mature (while I’m an epic failure as a musician).

I first heard this album about a month ago, and at first it was just a “cool” album for me; but it has grown on me so much since then. Space Is Only Noise has become one of the albums that I  definitely should have included in my top albums of 2011. Nicolas Jaar really hit the spot with his one, I love how the album is so well balanced between weird (and awesome) eeriness and minimal “chill-ness”.

If you like this, check out Jaar’s collab with Dave Harrington, Darkside. Also check the Don’t Break My Love EP, free to download.
